About African Eyes

African Eyes showcases the work of Max Bastard, a Social Documentary photographer based in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa.

Max has nearly 25 years experience as a photographer. His strong rural affiliations and fluency in isiXhosa and isiZulu assist in producing work that reveals an intimate yet respectful connection with his subjects. This connection creates visual narratives that are both deeply honest and powerful in their ability to provide social commentary. His career of twenty five years has spanned commercial, editorial, corporate, fashion, landscape and travel, and has given him an eclectic edge in determining and producing quality images for media and publishing.

Since 2013, Max has concentrated almost exclusively on Social Documentary work, to a large degree working with local and International NGO's and Corporates to assist them in creating visual narratives around the social work they do. Clients have included the DG Murray Trust, OXFAM Australia, HEIFER International, TREE, Inyathelo, GIBS Business School, Health Systems Trust,BIOWATCH, LETCEE and have covered topics as diverse as Education, Health, Agriculture and ECD.
